From haunting meditations to exhilarating celebrations, Echoes and Earth is a sweeping evening of contemporary dance exploring heritage, power and transformation, and the cycles of nature. This evening-length program features three powerful works by composer-choreographer Samuel Hobbs, performed by the acclaimed artists of push/FOLD alongside University of Idaho students.
The program takes place at the Hartung Theatre, and is suitable for all ages.
OZYMANDIAS (2023) - Opening with a grounded, heartfelt solo and closing in an exultant ensemble, Ozymandias grapples with identity, heritage, and community. Performed by student dancers from the University of Idaho, the work's fusion of post-contemporary movement and Latiné musical influences creates a rich and resonant reflection on belonging.
VESPERS EX (2024) - Drawn from four movements of Hobbs’ celebrated Vespers, this work pairs contemporary dance with Sergei Rachmaninoff’s All-Night Vigil. Ethereal and powerful, Vespers EX offers a contemporary, non-secular reflection on transformation, weaving post-contemporary partnering with the timeless beauty of a cappella choral music.
ILLUM (2023) – A sweeping, mythical journey through decomposition and renewal, Illum draws inspiration from the moon, the natural world, and the textures of visual art. Set to an original score by composer-choreographer Samuel Hobbs, the work blends athletic movement, intricate floorwork, and vivid staging to immerse audiences in a meditative yet thrilling exploration of cyclical transformation and unseen forces.
