A bit about Jameel Stephens Trio:

Rooted in a shared foundation of jazz study, this trio brings clarity, depth, and connection to every performance. Jameel Stephens (drums), Troy Robertson III (bass), and Reginald Lewis (saxophone) combine their individual talents into a sound that’s both grounded and explorative. With a focus on listening and interplay, their music balances precision with freedom, always evolving, always in conversation.

A bit about Jameel Stephens:

A Southside Chicago native, began playing drums at the age of 2, first using pots, pans, and spoons as a makeshift kit. By 5, he was playing in church, learning by ear from watching older musicians. Though he was more passionate about sports growing up, music was always present whether at pep rallies or in school bands.

He attended Benedictine University on a football scholarship while majoring in music education. When the scholarship ended he transferred to Illinois State University where he shifted his focus to Music Business and Jazz Studies after realizing his passion was in playing not teaching. Recognized by professors as “a workable talent” he began taking formal drum lessons to compliment his natural gift. His dedication led him from entry level jazz groups to becoming the top drummer in every elite jazz band on campus. He eventually earned a Masters degree in jazz performance.
