A Tribute To The Music Of Prince
On Wednesday, September 17, some of area's best singers and songwriters will gather at Small Batch Cellars in North Haven, CT to pay tribute to the legendary songwriter Guy Clark, whose debut album, Old No. 1, was released 50 years ago in the fall of 1975. Songwriters Meghan Cary, Adam Monaco, Buddy Mondlock, Rees Shad, and Carole Wise will perform the tracks from Old No. 1 in order, followed by a set where each artist will take the stage to perform an original song. Proceeds will benefit The Guy Clark Family Foundation in its ongoing support of songwriters.
On November 7, 1975, the day after his 34th birthday, RCA Records released Old No. 1. While not a commercial success by any stretch, the album was highly praised by the press. “L.A. Freeway,” “Desperados Waiting for a Train,” “Rita Ballou” “Texas 1947” “Let Him Roll” and “That Old Time Feeling” soon became instant classics. No one could have known then that Old No. 1 would inspire generations of American songwriters, troubadours and music fans. To mark the 50th anniversary of this influential release, the Guy Clark Family Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to supporting songwriters, will celebrating with a series of concerts to bring awareness to the organization, and to boost songwriters who work in the spirit of Guy Clark.
Tamara Saviano, a producer, writer, Grammy-winner and filmmaker who worked with guy for years, is on the board of the Guy Clark Family Foundation and working to put together these shows. She has just released a new memoir, Poets & Dreamers: My Life in Americana Music, about her decades in the music industry and her involvement in the beginning of what we now call “Americana.” Saviano worked for years with Guy Clark and Kris Kristofferson and has released both a book and documentary on Guy’s life. (If this is of interest, or there’s a book reviewer on staff, happy to send!)
