Michael Melle is widely known for his hay-formed figurative sculptures, often referred to as scarecrows, although the subject matter is often serious and controversial. They should rightly be seen as sculptures. He is also a serious painter, and this show presents work spanning his career. "My first love was always painting, which I began at age 16 and never stopped. Many of my earlier works explore human cruelty towards one another. Most of the other work begins with a blank paper and an empty mind. I make marks and smudges randomly and pick from the various images that reveal themselves."
