Erica Tso Haidas of Belonging Books and Taiki Magyar and Izzi Caplan of Big Tree are excited to announce the premiere screening of their collaborative documentary project, “Unerased: Asian Voices of Cape Cod.” The screening will take place at Cape Cinema.

This approximately 40 minute film amplifies and highlights the voices and experiences of diverse members of our Asian community living or growing up on Cape Cod. This truly collaborative documentary project is personal to both Tso Haidas and Magyar. Magyar grew up in Sandwich, MA, and is half-Japanese and half-Caucasian. Tso Haidas moved to Cape Cod ten years ago and is first-generation Chinese-Canadian.

Tso Haidas approached Magyar in the fall of 2023 about creating a short film to tell the stories of Asian Cape Codders. “I wanted to create a platform for some members of our Asian community to explore their identities and tell their authentic stories as I feel that these voices are often erased from the narrative,” Tso Haidas said. “While Belonging Books centers the voices and stories of underrepresented communities through literature, the medium of film called to me for this particular project.”

“Growing up half-Japanese in Sandwich in the 2000s, I was one of the only people of color in my school and broader community,” said Manx Taiki Magyar. “As a filmmaker, I was curious and excited to explore this experience of living and growing up Asian on Cape Cod, and more broadly, exploring what it meant to be Asian in white-centric towns in America.”

With grant support from Arts Foundation of Cape Cod and the National Endowment for the Arts, Mass Cultural Council, and individual donations, Tso Haidas, Magyar and Caplan recently completed the film and are excited to show it for the first time.
