The Long Beach Camerata Singers’ professional chamber ensemble, Catalyst, under the direction of Founder and Artistic Director Dr. James K. Bass, will bring The Music of the Bard to Los Altos United Methodist Church at 4:30. The concert will feature music compositions based on William Shakespeare’s most memorable lines and music that Shakespeare would have listened to in his time. The repertoire includes songs composed by Thomas Morley, William Byrd, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Nils Lindberg.
Shakespeare's plays include more than 2,000 references to music and it was customary for most of his plays to include at least one song (except for the early tragedies). Shakespeare made use of songs that were established in the popular repertoire of the period as well as composing his own lyrics.
Catalyst will perform songs based on text from
Cymbeline, Twelfth Night, The Tempest,
A Midsummer Night's Dream
and others.
